How to buy at a Seattle auto auction without a dealer license

Auctions here are not only salvage. The stock splits four ways: insurance write-offs, repairable cars with light damage, clean-title lease returns and trade-ins, and fleet units coming off rental contracts. Roughly two thirds of what crosses the block is damaged in some way, and the rest is ordinary used stock. Vehicle history report for auction vehicles at Seattle

Every lot comes with its history through Stat.VIN: prior owners, reported accidents, odometer readings and the sale record of that exact VIN. Read it against the title brand. Three brands matter here. Salvage means an insurer wrote the car off. Rebuilt means it was repaired and passed the state inspection that puts it back on the road. Washington also uses a WA salvage brand that stays on the record permanently. On a hybrid or an electric car, read the battery history as closely as the body damage: a pack that took an impact is the expensive part, not the panel.

What a Seattle purchase actually costs

To bid you put down a refundable deposit — it sets your ceiling rather than being a fee, and it comes back if you do not win. Then budget the winning bid plus roughly 8–10% in auction fees, our flat broker fee, and the transport. Delivery is a service we run ourselves, not a quote we forward on — it is priced per lot, and the rate follows the car rather than the city: its size, whether it runs, how far it goes. Two lines buyers underestimate: storage, which the auction charges daily once the free period ends, and the repair bill on a damaged car, which can outrun the purchase price if the hidden damage is structural.

Buying at Copart Seattle — FAQ

Yes. You place the bid, we hold the licence, and the car is titled in your name — you are the owner, not us. Nothing about the purchase runs through a third party.

Both charge a buyer fee on a sliding scale — roughly 8–10% of the hammer price — plus gate and internet fees. Our broker fee is flat and shown before you bid. The winning bid, the auction fees and our fee are due before the car is released; delivery is invoiced separately once the route is confirmed. We settle with the auction under our own account, so you never register with Copart or IAA yourself. One thing to know before you bid: a winning bid is binding, and walking away from a won lot costs a relist fee.

Two things: the cost of getting in, and the inventory you would otherwise never see. A public Copart account runs about $99–249 a year plus a refundable deposit, and it still leaves most of the yard closed to you — salvage and rebuildable lots are dealer-only, and that is the majority of what sells here. Our licence opens them. You pay no annual fee, no deposit to the auction, and no separate bill for a licensed transporter afterwards, because the delivery is ours too.

Not in person — the lot stays at the yard until it sells. What you get on Stat.VIN instead: the insurer's damage report, the full auction photo set, a VIN report with prior owners, accidents and odometer readings, and the sale history of that specific VIN.

Three. Copart runs two of them — the main one and copart north seattle, which holds separate inventory on its own sale days — and IAA works the metro as the third. One broker account covers all of them, so you bid on whichever lot is worth it that week. Tacoma is thirty miles south and the yard near Graham serves that side of the sound.

Open carrier by default, enclosed if you ask for it. The rate depends on the lot — size, whether it runs — and on the distance, and the calculator shows it before you bid rather than after you win. It goes on the same invoice as the car.

Most routes within Washington complete in a day or two after payment clears. Longer hauls depend on the corridor and the season. Storage matters here: there is a free period at the yard, after which the auction charges daily, so we schedule pickup as soon as payment goes through.

Yes — the lot listing states whether it runs and drives, and non-running cars go on a flatbed with winch loading rather than being towed. That is already reflected in the delivery quote, at no extra charge.

Yes. If you've already won a lot at this yard, you can order delivery from there as a standalone service. You don't need to bid through Stat.VIN to use our delivery service.

Yes. Give us the lot numbers and a ceiling for each, and we run them in parallel — you are only committed to the ones you win. Buyers watching a specific model usually track three or four lots across the Seattle yards and take whichever goes cheapest that week.
