About the service

How to buy at a California car auction without a dealer license

California splits auction inventory the same way every state does: clean-title cars — lease returns, trade-ins, fleet units — are open to the public with a free account, while salvage lots, which make up most of what Copart and IAAI list here, are restricted to licensed dealers. Our broker account already holds that license, so you bid on either kind of lot without registering a business. What follows, in order: what California calls these documents and how to clear one, what a purchase actually costs, and how transport works from the yard to your address.

How to get a salvage title cleared in California

California does not issue a salvage title the way most states do — it issues a salvage certificate, and the wording matters when you file. After the insurer declares a total loss the car is written off and the certificate is issued in place of the pink slip. To put the car back on the road you repair it, pass a brake and light inspection, then apply to the DMV for a revived title; the record then carries a rebuilt title california brand permanently. Keep the repair invoices and parts receipts — the DMV asks for them, and a salvage title california cannot be cleared without that paperwork.

What a California Copart purchase actually costs

Budget the winning bid plus roughly 8–10% in auction fees, our flat broker fee, and transport from $395. California charges sales tax at the DMV when you register, and a revived vehicle needs its brake and light inspection first — both belong in the budget from the start. One California-specific line: smog certification. A revived car still has to meet state emissions rules before registration, and that is a repair-shop cost, not a fee we can quote.

FAQ

Buying at California car auctions — FAQ

It depends on the document. Clean-title lots are open to the public through a free account. Salvage lots — most of what Copart and IAAI list at their California yards — require a dealer or dismantler license. Our broker account already holds it, so you set the maximum bid and the car is titled in your name.

On clean-title lots, yes — a free public account is enough. On salvage lots, no: California restricts them to licensed buyers, and that is where a broker account replaces a license you do not have. You choose the lot and the ceiling; we place the bid under our licence.

If you are looking up how to get a state bid card for Copart, the short answer is that you do not need one to buy through us: the broker licence covers access at every California yard, and you never register with the state yourself.

We hold the license California requires for salvage lots, place your bid up to the limit you set, track sale days across every yard in the state, and handle the paperwork and title transfer after you win. Transport is arranged through the same network, on the same invoice.

Not in person — the lot stays at the auction yard until it is sold. What you get on Stat.vin instead: the insurer's damage report, the full auction photo set, a VIN report with prior owners, accidents and odometer readings, and the sale history of that specific VIN.

A salvage certificate. California pulls the title and issues a certificate instead, so paperwork that says salvage title california usually means the certificate. The distinction matters at the DMV counter: the forms and the fee schedule are tied to the certificate, not to a branded title.

How to get a salvage title cleared in California comes down to three steps: repair the car, pass a brake and light inspection, then file with the DMV for a revived title. The record keeps a rebuilt title california brand afterwards. Two things people miss: the inspection is separate from smog certification, and the DMV asks for repair invoices and parts receipts — collect them as you go rather than reconstructing them later.

The lot price and auction fees come first, then our flat broker fee, then transport. Two charges catch people out: storage starts accruing once the free period ends, and walking away from a won lot triggers a copart relist fee — which is why we confirm the full landed cost before the sale rather than after.

Each yard gives a free period after the sale, and copart storage fees begin the day it ends. California is the easiest state to stay inside that window: with 34 yards, a carrier is usually already working nearby, so pickup is booked within a day or two of payment.

The winning bid, auction fees and our broker fee are due before the car is released; delivery is invoiced separately once the route is confirmed. Copart payment methods for the auction side are wire transfer and card, and we handle that payment under our account rather than asking you to register with the auction.

A copart pure sale means the lot sells to the highest bid with no reserve — whatever the number is. On approval means the seller can still accept or decline after bidding closes, so a win is not final until they confirm. Both appear on the lot page, and both change how you should set your ceiling.

Once you win, the car moves by open or enclosed carrier from the yard to the address you give us. California car shipping starts at $395, and short hops between Los Angeles-area yards and a Los Angeles address are the cheapest routes we run anywhere. The calculator number is the invoice number.

Inside a metro, one day after the car clears the yard. Los Angeles to the Bay Area or San Diego to Sacramento, two to three days. Runs from out-of-state yards take two to five days depending on distance.

Yes — the lot listing shows Copart run and drive status, and non-running cars go on a flatbed with winch loading rather than being towed. That is already reflected in the delivery quote, at no extra charge.

We cover Copart and IAAI yards in all fifty states. The state pages list every yard with its address, sale day and delivery rates — start there if the car you want sits outside California.
