How to buy at a Utah car auction without a dealer license

The yards split their inventory in two. Clean-title cars — lease returns, trade-ins, fleet units — are open to the public with a free account. Branded lots, which make up most of what Copart and IAA list here, are restricted to licensed buyers, and our broker account already holds that license. What follows, in order: what a branded title means in Utah and how salvage and rebuilt fit under it, what a purchase costs, and how transport works.

What is a branded title in Utah, and what falls under it

A branded title utah is the umbrella term: any title the state has marked, whatever the reason. Two brands cover most auction lots. A utah salvage title is issued when an insurer writes the car off, and the salvage title utah wording you will see in listings means the same document. After repair and a state inspection, a rebuilt title utah is issued and the car can be registered again. The brand stays on the record permanently either way — read the certificate on the lot rather than the listing label.

What a Utah Copart purchase actually costs

Budget the winning bid plus roughly 8–10% in auction fees, our flat broker fee, and transport from $395. Utah charges sales tax at titling, and a rebuilt car needs its inspection before it can be registered — that is a shop and paperwork cost, not a rate we can quote. Distance is short: Ogden and Salt Lake City sit about forty minutes apart along I-15.

Buying at Utah car auctions — FAQ

It depends on the title. Clean-title lots are open to the public through a free account. Branded lots — most of what Copart and IAA list here — require a licensed buyer, and that is what a broker account replaces. You set the maximum bid and the car is titled in your name.

Copart utah covers Ogden and Salt Lake City, with IAA branches in both. Ogden is the one to watch first: it carries the larger share of the state's inventory, which runs counter to what most buyers expect from the capital. When you search, use SLC rather than the full city name — the short form returns results far more reliably.

We hold the license Utah requires for branded lots, place your bid up to the limit you set, track sale days at both yards, and handle the paperwork and title transfer after you win. Transport is arranged through the same network, on the same invoice.

Not in person — the lot stays at the yard until it is sold. What you get on Stat.vin instead: the insurer's damage report, the full auction photo set, a VIN report with prior owners, accidents and odometer readings, and the sale history of that specific VIN.

It is the umbrella term for any title the state has marked. Once you win, the car moves by open or enclosed carrier from the yard to the address you give us. Delivery starts at $395. Both yards sit on the I-15 corridor about forty minutes apart, so in-state pickup is short whichever one the lot is in. The calculator number is the invoice number.

Most in-state runs take a day after payment clears — the population is concentrated along one corridor, so distances are short. Long hauls are straightforward too: I-15 runs north to south through the whole state. Winter storms in the mountain passes between December and March can add a day.

Yes — the lot listing shows the run and drive status, and non-running cars go on a flatbed with winch loading rather than being towed. That is already reflected in the delivery quote, at no extra charge.

The winning bid, auction fees and our broker fee are due before the car is released; delivery is invoiced separately once the route is confirmed. We settle with the auction under our own account, so you never register with Copart or IAA yourself.
